Two remain in the race to become University of Latvia rector

Two candidates have been selected as having possibilities to become the next rector of the University of Latvia, the University announced December 11.

Signe Bāliņa and Gundars Bērziņš will compete for the position it was decided after the evaluation of initial applicants by the Selection Commission and the LU Council. In all, 24 people applied for the job but 22 were set aside.

Signe Bāliņa is currently a professor at the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics of the University of Latvia and adviser to the rector. Gundars Bērziņš is the dean and professor of the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics at LU.

In the coming months, the university staff, teaching staff and students will have the opportunity to get further acquainted with the rector candidates and their plans for the institution.

The selection of the new rector will end with an election at the LU assembly on February 23.

Candidates for the post of LU rector must have a Doctor of Science degree in one of the LU's strategic specialization areas. In addition, according to the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, candidates must have an impeccable reputation and management experience in the field of higher education and science for no less than eight years. The rector's monthly salary before taxes is set at 11,935 euros per month.
