This year, 13 schools and other educational institutions will be closed, while another 40 educational institutions will be affected by reorganization of one form or another, such as merger with another school, according to information released by the Ministry of Education and Science.

Some of the schools on the list are in rural areas where student numbers are small or have all but vanished, while other schools in urban areas face being merged. Evening schools, boarding schools and other educational institutions are affected in addition to regular elementary and secondary schools.

News of the closures is likely to be met with opposition in some cases, though government insists a more efficient and cost-effective educational system will improve standards.

In 2018, 53 educational institutions, including 19 schools, were affected by reorganization of the school network.

On June 5 the ministry is due to release details of a survey of pupils and parents about the current learning experience in schools in Latvia, as well as about the expected changes. School2030, in cooperation with Edurio, conducted a survey of pupils and parents in the second half of 2018 to use these views as a source of information to improve curriculum content.
