Rīga Technical University ranked among world's greenest

Rīga Technical University (RTU) has secured 45th place in GreenMetric's world university sustainability rankings published December 19.

The GreenMetric ranking rates universities taking into account criteria linked to sustainability, such as transportation, water usage, waste management, setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, and education and research.

Two universities from Latvia have made it into the ranking, with Liepāja University placing 294th.

“Riga Technical University has decided conceptually that we as a university do not use cars that are diesel fuel or petrol fuel fuel. RTU currently has only electric cars in the car park and we are moving to the fact that as a university we want to ensure our operations with environmentally friendly transport, that is, no exhaust,“ Juris Iļjins, administrative director of RTU, told Latvian Television.

Last year, the university reduced heat consumption by 30% and electricity consumption by 35%, according to RTU's representative.

From the other Baltic States, Lithuanian Vytautas Magnus University and Mykolas Romeris University have placed 445th and 547th respectively, and Estonian University of Life Sciences and Estonian Academy of Arts 593rd and 1019th respectively.
