No schools will close in Rīga this year

On September 1, 101 schools, the same number as last year, will open their doors in Rīga, said Jana Cera, deputy head of the Education Department of the Rīga City Council Education, Culture and Sports Department's General Education Schools Division, in an interview to Latvian Radio July 25.

In seven schools, the high-school stage (year 10 to 12) will not be opened this year. These schools will gradually become primary and secondary schools, taking into account the insufficient number of children in the high school stage.

"School network development has been taking place for very many years and this has been particularly intense over the last 5-6 years when we have been looking very closely at what we have in the high school education phase in the framework of public sector policy [..] There are 101 schools founded by Riga City municipality and the total number will not change in the next school year," said Cera.

Cera said that in 20 years the number of schools in Rīga has reduced by 50 – schools have been reorganized, merged or closed.
