Liepāja University to become RTU Liepāja Academy

Liepaja University (LiepU) will become part of Rīga Technical University (RTU) on March 1. This is provided for in the cooperation agreement signed by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM), Liepāja City Council, LiepU and RTU on January 29.

The new name of the LiepU will be RTU Liepāja Academy.

Once integrated into the RTU, the Liepāja University will remain autonomous, but the consolidation hopes to strengthen the competitiveness and efficiency and accelerate the increase in scientific capacity of the university. EUR 10.8 million will be allocated for consolidation of the institution of higher education for the improvement of study programs and research, development of new programs and digitalization of the study process.

RTU rector Tālis Juhna sees engineering and technology direction, as well as pedagogy and education, as the main areas to contribute to.

“By signing a contract with a potential mission, we will continue to prepare tutors, teachers mainly in STEM. We have a plan to teach teachers very practically how to better teach physics and maths. The school of pedagogy created here in Latvia will be complemented by the course of teaching STEM, mathematics and physics,” Juhna noted.

After joining RTU, Liepāja University will be named RTU Liepāja Academy. In addition, the RTU Liepāja Academy Development Council will be established, where representatives of IZM, Liepaja municipality, RTU Liepaja Academy and RTU will work, and industry representatives could be included.
