March 22 saw a meeting of the Education, Culture and Sports Committee of Riga City Council approving regulatory amendments that will mean Chinese language will now be taught in one of the city's schools.

"The regulations not only confirmed the new curriculum for basic mathematics, science and technology, but also established that, in cooperation with the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, the Riga secondary school number 34 will introduce an adult non-formal education program called "Chinese Language" which will mean that not only students of the school but also other people will be able to learn Chinese there," said a release from the city council.

The opening ceremony of the Confucius Class at Riga 34th Secondary School took place in September 2017, with Chinese diplomat Mr. Li Tao in attendance. The Confucius Class aims to familiarize Latvians not only with language but with various aspects of Chinese culture and organizes cultural exchange programs. Two Chinese teachers are already working at the school:  Ms. Dong Fang and Ms. Wu Tiantian.
