Government to decide on higher pay for university educators

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Today, the meeting of the Coalition Parties will discuss raising the pay of higher education teachers, Latvian Radio reported August 17.

As reported, by law, salaries should increase for higher education teachers this year, but this has not been done. Meanwhile, for teachers at other levels, wages will rise. The Latvian Education and Science Workers Association (LIZDA) has announced a picket, which will take place on Tuesday, if the government does not create a solution for the situation.

A short-term solution has been reached in negotiations with the Ministry of Education last week: the Ministry is prepared to allocate the necessary €400 thousand to the salary rise for four months of this year. From next year, six million euro is needed to complete the salary increase schedule – these must be found in the national budget.

In the negotiations, the Prime Minister has expressed a vision for how to resolve future disagreements about the timetable and the sources of funding. If the government does not decide today to support university teachers, the Association will picket at the Cabinet tomorrow.
