The government on Tuesday, August 18, at a Cabinet meeting, supported a EUR 383 777 grant to increase the pay of higher-education institution teachers for the final four months of this year, Minister for Education said August 18.

As of September 1, 2020, the lowest monthly salary rate for high-school and college educators will be raised. The lower monthly salary rate for the professor will be raised to EUR 1569, EUR 1256 for the associate professor, EUR 1005 for the docent, EUR 805 for the lecturer and EUR 641 for the assistant, whose rates are affected by the basic costs of the study site.

Other university and college employees are also expected to have their pay raised.

The Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) is prepared to find the necessary funding for increasing the salaries of higher education teachers in 2020, providing it within the budget allocated to the IZM.

The allocation of additional State budget resources for the provision of higher education and college teachers' salary in 2021 and further is included in the list of priority measures of the IZM and shall be examined in the Cabinet in the process of drafting and examining the medium-term budgetary framework and the draft annual State budget bill.

The government in mid-June backed a €8.2 million grant to raise the minimum salary rate for educators from €750 to €790. The Latvian Education and Science Workers' Trade Union (LIZDA) pointed out that the increase in remuneration has not been extended to higher education teachers, creating an inequality situation. In mid-June, the government decided to postpone this issue to next year's budget negotiations, angering LIZDA.
