Liepāja University plans merger with larger university

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Liepāja University (LiepU) is planning to join either the University of Latvia (LU) or Rīga Technical University (RTU), LSM reported November 8.

According to earlier information on the local information portal “Liepajniekiem.lv”, LiepU decided to join the University of Latvia (LU). On Monday, the LiepU Constitution Assembly failed to elect a new rector. The two candidates Indra Dedze and Ineta Kristovska did not get the required votes. The media outlet stated that it was decided to join LU because there would be fewer extensive reorganizations or changes.

Later information by the LiepU Council chair Andris Grafs shows that the final decision had not been taken yet and that the university was leaning more toward RTU.

Asked what will change in LiepU's life, LiepU Constitution Meeting Chairman Uldis Zupa said that it is very difficult to predict what changes will take place, how rapidly things will change, and what the consequences will be.

The final decision will still have to be taken by the LiepU governing council.
