Rīga's schools have decided to introduce a parental co-payment for school lunches at €1.15 a day starting October. Lunches will still be free for pupils in years 1–4 and those belonging to socially disadvantaged groups, Rīga City Council said August 19.

The parents' co-payment will amount to €1.15 in schools (one meal – lunch) and €2 in preschool (three meals – breakfast, lunch, snack) per day.

For pupils in years 1 to 4, the full costs of catering will continue to be covered by the budget of the State and the local government.

In addition, the local government's resources will cover full catering costs for students whose families are recognized as poor, disadvantaged, or registered in the Riga Family Support Register, as well as for orphans, disabled people, and children whose care obligations parents do not fulfill.

In September 2022 the catering of students will be paid in the same way as currently from State and local government budget resources, but the parents' co-payment will apply from October 1.

The relevant draft decision has yet to be approved at the meeting of the Riga City Council, scheduled for August 24.
