Rīga Technical University elects new head

The Constitutional Meeting of Riga Technical University (RTU) has elected the new rector of the RTU for the next five years – RTU Science Prorector, academic Tālis Juhna, who received 137 of the 190 votes, RTU said in a statement Wednesday.

The newly elected rector, Juhna, will start his work at the end of March, with an exact date agreed with the RTU Council. Juhna is a graduate of RTU, obtained a doctorate in Sweden and had been in various positions in higher education since 2002, both as a professor and a prorector.

In parallel to administrative work, Juhna is active in science, leading and as a scientist participating in local and internationally funded science projects. The most recent major solutions developed together with partners was the technique for monitoring Covid-19 in wastewater.

Currently, the rector of the RTU is Leonīds Ribickis. He has been in the position since early 2011.
