Slight increase in number of pupils in Latvia

This year, the number of students who will acquire primary or general secondary education has increased to 217,500 or 0.7% more than last year, newswire LETA reported data of the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) September 10.

This year, 150 children will be homeschooled and 7,114 will be in distance learning. As of May 31 2021, there were around 6,300 pupils in distance learning, so the number has risen by nearly a thousand.

In years 1 to 6, a total of 118,855 pupils started learning, of which 860 will study in distance learning and 139 will be homeschooled.

In years 7 to 9, 62,911 pupils will be learning, of which 1,521 children will be educated in distance learning and 11 children will be homeschooled. 

In high school, 35,734 children will obtain general education, of which 4,733 will be distance learning. 

675 schools began the academic year.
