Vaccination of teachers who work on-site will be started earlier than initially planned, Latvian government decided February 16.

Previously, the vaccination of kindergarten and school educators was scheduled to take place after the vaccination of 60-70-year-olds. The government decided  today that teachers who work on-site should be moved from group 5 to group 4, namely vaccinated alongside 60-69-year-olds.

According to figures from the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM), there are 12 031 kindergarten teachers in Latvia and 12 546 members of technical staff, including nannies. There are 2,203 teachers and 1,720 technical staff in special educational establishments.

Once pupils of grades 1-2 start on-site learning, the range of teachers to  be vaccinated in group 4 will be extended and the figure will need to be clarified.

Students in grade 3 and older are unlikely to be able to start school in person too soon, the Minister for Health said. This may still depend on regions and the incidence of Covid-19 in particular areas.
