The rector of the University of Latvia (LU), Professor Indriķis Muižnieks, has signed an agreement with the full company “RERE BMV” on the design and construction of the LU House of Letters, LU said September 22.

The House of Letters is to be built next to the Academic Center of the University of Latvia (LU) in Tornakalns, which together with the two existing houses – Nature and Science – will form LU's intended campus.

House of Letters will be home to the majority of social sciences and humanities: Faculty of History and Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Pedagogy, Psychology and Art, Faculty of Business, Leadership and Economics, and the Faculty of Theology. It will also house three institutes - Latvian History Institute, Philosophy and Sociology Institute and Latvian Language Institute - as well as the business incubator, innovation center and LU library.

"The House of Letters has a very important role. This building will contain the majority of humanities and institutes, which means that we are increasingly getting closer to our target. Synergy is important not only between natural sciences but between all sciences together, which will be in one place in Torņakalns," said Ina Druviete, the LU pro-rector in the field of humanities and social sciences.

The competition for the design and construction of the home of the LU Academic Centre Writers was launched in October 2019. According to the expert and procurement commission, the offer of RERE BMV was unanimously accepted for the most economically advantageous tender, LU said.

House of Letters is expected to open in 2022.
