High risk of flood and evacuation in Jelgava

The Svēte River in the vicinity of Jelgava  has flooded and residents must be ready for evacuation, the municipality reports.

On the morning of August 2 the water level rose rapidly.

Streets next to the river have already flooded and the water is fast approaching Jelgava.

Municipal employees are visiting houses and informing them of the risks and possible evacuation. Residents in need of assistance or evacuation are invited to report to the Municipal Operational Information Centre at 8787 or email [email protected].

Power supply can also be disrupted. Large territories can flood.

The most dangerous situation is currently in the village of "Atpūta". Ziedonis, Miezīte, Tušķi, as well as several roads and small streets, are also potentially flooded.

These areas are mostly private houses. There is no information on how many people could be affected by potential flooding.

Forced evacuation is not currently considered, but residents are urged to "pick up whatever you can" and go to relatives in advance if the situation is risky, without leaving everything to the last minute.

Using drones, the State Fire and Rescue Service has surveyed the river from Jelgava to the Lithuanian border. But the authorities want more information from Lithuania so they can predict how much water might be coming in from the neighboring country.
