Environment Minister: Latvia needs more flood-proofing

Take note – story published 1 year ago

In several local governments of Latvia, river dams should be reinforced, Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development Māris Sprindžuks (United List) said in an interview with Latvian Radio on April 3.

The Minister said that this year has confirmed that flooding is becoming more frequent. First, there was an emergency situation in Jēkabpils in January, and now, the floods have affected the municipality of Augšdaugava, Sprindžuks said.

In general, the Minister estimated that the flood situation “is not very extreme”, but it is unpleasant. “Local governments are prepared because flooding is always occurring in the same municipalities,” the minister added.

In several municipalities, river dams should be strengthened. He said: “There is tremendous pressure on hydrobuildings, creeks and cracks are forming. (..) For municipalities, there are worries at the moment that the dam could break. Additional spending is expected in the summer to fix it all, sort it out.”
