Rīga Zoo: Rescued bear is young and healthy

Take note – story published 1 year and 2 months ago

On Wednesday, April 5, a bear cub was taken to the Rīga Zoo after being observed wandering along the Limbaži-Aloja road for several days. The cub is a three-month-old female, who is well-developed and strong, the zoo said on April 6.

The bear is under the supervision of zoo veterinarians.

Riga Zoo vet Māra Krasovska said: "The baby is a bear girl about three months old. She is alarmed, but aggression is not shown and her health status is stable, no injuries have been identified in the veterinary inspection. She had a good meal yesterday, including food left at night, and is currently fed with oatmeal and raw egg, with necessary vitamins and probiotics."

Tatjana Ivasenko, head of the Mammalian division, pointed out that the bear was well-developed and strong, both the weight and appearance, and behavior corresponds to the age of three months. “It doesn't look weak or emaciated, so it can be concluded that the baby hadn't been left for long without her mother. Its behavior was consistent with wildlife – when it was brought to the zoo, it was scared and looked for a place to hide,” she said.

Gita Strode, director of the Nature Conservation Agency, said: “From activity on social networks, there are very many different opinions about the bears in society. Fear, ignorance, and confusion intersect with reckless and flawed judgments. Some see a teddy bear, while another sees a threat to their bee apiary. We are asking not to increase negation. Currently, the competent authorities – the Nature Conservation Agency, Riga National Zoo and the Latvian State Forestry Science Institute Silava – are looking for the best solution. Thank you to those who reported the bear, sending video and thus helping specialists to remotely assess the situation and the need for help. We also call on others in similar situations to report immediately to the responsible authorities and not to share the “find” on social networks.”
