Environmental service reports improvement in wastewater treatment

In Latvia, 26 wastewater treatment plants have been polluting the environment for a long time, the State Environmental Service (VVD) has determined. The service pointed to an overall improvement in its August 8 report.

The Service said that in 2022, 1,593,085 cubic meters of wastewater, or 0.92% of the total, was released untreated into the environment.

Out of 26 environmentally unfriendly water treatment plants, nine manage municipal wastewater only, eight manage municipal and production wastewater, and nine – production only.

In 2019, there were 58 such plants.

The VVD carries out a national testing program in high-risk plants and plants that discharge wastewater into risk water facilities. It is one of the VVD's control tools for more efficient monitoring of wastewater treatment plants.

Overall, the Environmental Service pointed to a positive trend and improvement in the situation.
