A total of 187.7 million units of deposit packaging were placed on the market between February and July, of which 49 million were placed on the market in July alone.
Nearly half or 48% of deposit packages have been collected in Rīga and Pierīga. The smallest proportion was in Latgale with 9%.
Representatives of the “deposit package operator” indicated that a large part of the purchased deposit packages are still in the consumption process – not yet emptied or are stored at home.
During the first six months, 46% of the deposit packages placed on the market consist of PET bottles, 26% consist of cans, while another 22% consist of refillable (AU) glass bottles which are returned to the producers of beverages – these can be used up to 10-15 times, thereby saving a large amount of energy and resources. 6% of the packages placed on the market consist of disposable glass bottles.
As from August 1, only drink packages marked with the Latvian deposit label are allowed to be sold, so it is expected that more and more people will participate in the deposit system.
