New footbridge on Zunda Canal in Rīga

Connecting Dzegužkalns with Ķīpsala, and Iļģuciems with the center of Riga, works on the improvement of the Nameja Embankment area have been completed - a footbridge and boardwalk has been built between Ūdens Street and Mazā Ūdens Street, Riga City Council said on October 17.

The project was implemented with the support of a participatory budget competition organized by the Riga City Council. It was submitted by the Dzirciems and Iļģuciems Neighborhood Association.

The project aims to create an environment that attracts lovers of art and active recreation. The land road in the area is used by pedestrians and cyclists to get from the city center and Ķīpsala to Iļģuciems, Dzirciems, and further to Imanta or Bolderāja.

Namejs Embankment is located in the protection zone of the historic centre of Riga. This stretch of the Namejs Embankment is also the 23rd section of Jūrtaka trail, which is marked in tourist guides.

The project cost € 59,800. It was implemented by Pontoni.lv Ltd.

The Riga City Council reminded that until October 31, on the website "balso.riga.lv", Riga residents are invited to vote for one of the 22 neighborhood development ideas submitted to the participatory budget competition by Riga residents and neighborhood associations. The projects that receive the most votes from residents and improve the environment in the long term will be implemented. This year, the total municipal funding for the participatory budget is €700 000. The municipality will grant up to € 100,000 per project.
