Rare find in Latvia, Murmastiene – two eagles in one nest

In Murmastiene, Varakļāni municipality, an especially rare case – two young eagles in one nest – has been discovered, said Latvian State Forests (LVM).

LVM senior expert and ornithologist Uģis Bergmanis noticed the nest while doing routine monitoring.

Two young eagles in one nest is a rare find, since it is typical for the species to pursue obligate siblicide or cainism.

"Usually two birds hatch from two eggs, and the oldest kills the youngest. In under 2% of all cases two birds grow up," said the ornithologist.

In the territory of Murmastiene, this is the ninth such case in 40 years.
