More forest fires in first half of 2023 than whole of last year

Take note – story published 1 year and 3 months ago

This year 470 forest fires have been registered and extinguished, with a total burned forest area of 589 hectares, of which 92 hectares were young stands, LETA was informed by representatives of the State Forest Service (VMD) on June 22.

The Service draws attention to the fact that this year more area has burned than in the annual cut of the past three years. A total of 391 forest fires of 221 hectares was extinguished in 2022, 466 fires and 505 hectares in 2021, and 581 fires and 528 hectares in 2020.

Although it has rained in many areas this week, there is still a high risk of fire in forests and swamps. The State Forest Service recalls that as of May 1, the forest fire hazard period is in force throughout the country, and asks that no bonfires be lit in the forest, even in the specially designated areas.

The State Forest Service provides fire protection in all Latvian forests.  Forest fire fighting works are in close cooperation with the State Fire and Rescue Service, so 112 should be called immediately when a forest fire is detected.
