Pushkin monument gone from Rīga park

The monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin has been collected from Kronvalda Park in Rīga, according to a Twitter entry by Rīga Vice-Mayor Linda Ozola on May 30.

Ozola wrote: "This is another historic day. We have removed the illegally installed Pushkin monument."

In late April, the coalition of the Riga City Council supported the relocation of a sculpture of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, which was made by Russian sculptor Alexander Taratinov and given to Rīga as a gift from the city of Moscow.

The two-meter-high monument stood in a prominent position in Kronvalda Park for nearly 14 years before it was belatedly decided by the council it had been installed illegally and should be removed.

The municipality has reportedly been looking for opportunities to put it somewhere else, though where that might be is not yet known. However, Pushkin's presence has not been banished entirely, as there is still Pushkin Street (Puškina iela) not far from the Central Market.

As you probably know, Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was a poet and writer regarded as the father of modern Russian literature. He never visited Rīga.
