Textile waste sorting improves in Latvia

From March 29 to April 21 this year, the volume of textile waste recycled has increased by 15% due to the environmental campaigns implemented by the “Latvian Green Point” and “Eco Baltia Environment” compared to the previous month, the Director of Latvian Green Point Kaspars Zakulis said in an interview to Latvian Radio May 31.

174 tonnes of textiles were collected during the campaign.

Asked about whether this is a lot, Zakulis said that, looking at the possibilities that could be collected in Latvia at all if a uniform textile collection system had been established, this is little. “But given that we are only at the beginning – there are only about 190 containers in Latvia with our support – that is a lot,” Zakulis said.

Zakulis said that since 2019, when the collection of textiles was launched, the level of awareness of the population has increased greatly.

“People increasingly understand what is redundant in these containers. If at first we got very low - and poor-quality clothing and various textile products, then people now realize that they will either get into re-use or transformation or further processing. As a result, people are becoming more conscious and placing more quality products in [containers],” Zakulis said.

There are currently no textile processing plants in Latvia, it is being exported for processing abroad. Zakulis assumed that in the future, Latvia could set up its own plant.
