Get carried away by the caraway in 2021!

The Latvian Botanical Society has on January 4 named the caraway (Carum carvi) as its plant of the year 2021.

The caraway grows in the wild all throughout Europe, except the Mediterranean area. The plant has been cultivated for centuries and used in culinary and herbal medicine. In Latvia, it is particularly famous for its presence in the distinctive Jāņu cheese

Experts from the Botanical Society said that over the past decade the plant has become less common.

"It is difficult now to find a meadow where you could go and pick a bunch of caraway, which was taken for granted in the past decades," said the experts.

We have already reported on Latvia's bird of the year. The last natural wonder to be placed in the spotlight remains the insect of 2021.
