The “Pilsēta cilvēkiem” (City for People) organization has launched an initiative on the portal manabalss.lv, which would determine that the municipality is responsible for cleaning all sidewalks in Rīga, Latvian Radio reported February 15.

Currently, the initiative has already collected around 400 of the total ten thousand signatures needed to be submitted to the Rīga City Council.

Mihails Simvulidi, Chairman of the City for People organization, is convinced that the current system, that often the owner of the adjacent territory is responsible for cleaning the sidewalks, has proven to be ineffective and often the sidewalks are uncleaned.

“There are big problems with cleaning sidewalks in Rīga. By some houses, the sidewalks are cleaned well, some aren't cleaned at all. Real estate owners or managers are currently responsible for this. As you can see, this system does not work at this time, and we propose that the sidewalks be cleaned by the municipality,” Simvulidi said.

One can sign the initiative at manabalss.lv.
