Latvia's beloved bear Ilzīte sends out birthday invitations

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Latvia's dearly beloved bear Ilzīte marks her 22nd birthday this year, said Arta Krūmiņa, education and communication specialist at Līgatne Nature Trail. A traditional celebration cake will be handed to the birthday-bear on the morning of January 11.

In honor of the special day, the annual celebrations will be organized at the nature trails on Wednesday, January 11, at 11:00. On that day, all named Ilze and those born on January 11 can come visit the trails for free.

Bear Ilzīte along with her human foster mother Velga Vītola are inviting everyone to visit after three pandemic years. As each year, a cake made of fish, nuts, berries, honey and other bearly imaginable treats will be made.

Ilzīte never sleeps through her birthday. Like many other captive bears, she does not sleep in the winter. Bears and other residents of Līgatne nature trails will wait for visitors every day during the winter season from 9:00 until 16:00.

Ilzīte was born on January 11, 2001 in the nature trails of Līgatne. At birth Ilzīte weighed only 500 grams, but at the moment her weight has reached 150 kilograms. Her biological mother couldn't take care of her, so the Līgatne Trail worker Velga Vītola took care of the bear from the first day.
