Please don't feed the bears

Take note – story published 2 years ago

An increased number of sightings suggests Latvia's bear population is awake again after winter hibernation.

However, members of the public are being warned not to feed the hungry creatures, no matter how much they might like them, LTV reported March 29.

Recent sightings have come mainly from northern districts of Valmiera, Valka and Gulbene, where evidence suggests that someone is leaving carrots by the side of the road for the bears. This is not allowed and will end up being counter-productive, according to Rolands Auziņš of the Nature Conservation Agency (DAP), who told LTV it risks making the bears dependent on food handouts and making them associate specific locations with both human activity and food.

Feeding bears is strictly outlawed.
