Recycle your Xmas tree for free

Take note – story published 1 year and 5 months ago

With the Christmas and New Year holidays now passed, many people face the annual conundrun of what to do with their defunct christmas tree. Help is at hand thanks to the "Eco Baltia vide" recycling company which will take in trees (minus decorations of course), reports Latvian Radio.

Last year, the company recycled about 3,000 trees at its locations aroud the country and this year it is doing the same – though donors are asked to check the cut-off dates for the free service (for example until January 20 in Liepāja, but only until January 10 in Saldus). If you miss the date, you may have to pay a small fee to hand in your festive boughs.

Ivo Skripko, head of the Liepāja branch of SIA "Eco Baltia vide", showed the container where the Christmas trees collected this year will go. Residents can apply themselves to the waste manager by calling or emailing, and Christmas trees will then be collected free of charge on Fridays. The company will collect Christmas trees for free until January 20, after this date it will be a paid service or you will have to bring them to the container yourself.

Skripko pointed out: "Last year we collected around 500 Christmas trees... a Christmas tree is green waste, it is best to bring it here yourself and hand it in."

When the Christmas trees are collected, the company sends them for processing.

"When we collect a large enough volume, we pass it on to the chipping company in Grobinė for processing, we give it for free, the company chips it."

Residents are invited to use these free collection options and not simply dump trees or put them out for domestic waste collection.
