Thunderstorm and falling trees caused substantial damage Thursday

Thursday night, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) responded to 164 calls related to strong thunderstorms, Latvian Radio reported June 25.

Most of the calls were received in connection with wind and the damage it caused. A total of 87 calls were received for  fallen trees, in eight cases the trees had fallen on the buildings, VUGD spokeswoman Agrita Vītola said. In one case, a tree had fallen on a garden house injuring four people.

26 drunk drivers were caught on Latvian roads on the second day of Midsummer, and one driver who had used narcotic substances, according to the State Police. Most drink drivers were caught around Rīga. 64 traffic accidents were registered on June 24, with 14 people injured and one killed, police spokeswoman Līna Kaļķe said.
