Tonne of fish removed from pool near toppled Soviet monument

On Wednesday, August 31, the remaining fish from the dismantled Soviet Monument pool at Uzvaras Park were removed, which had taken shelter in the sludge. Altogether, a tonne of fish has been removed from the pool, Rīga Zoo representative Ansis Egle told LSM.

Most fish in the pool were carp. Some of them will live in the zoo's pool near the gelada baboons, but most will be fed to other zoo residents.

“We chose the bigger ones and the ones in the best condition,” Ansis Egle told LSM.lv. "The zoo's specialists assessed every fish we let in. The capacity of the pool is limited and it is important for us to create a balanced ecosystem. It is essential that the density of fish in the pool is not too high."

The main fish eaters will be crocodiles, sea eagles, and bears. “There may be more animals who will appreciate this offer,” Egle added.
