“The hospital is a little in debt to everyone right now,” the head of the hospital Grigorijs Semjonovs said. There is no money to pay suppliers, including medicines. “We were warned that if we didn't pay a specific amount of total debt, further deliveries would be stopped.”
This has not happened yet, but austerity has already been introduced, which means that the patient will suffer. The root of the problem has not changed in Semjonovs' insight – national tariffs are too low to pay for expenses. All other solutions help only in the short term.
Daugavpils Regional Hospital is the only one that has currently warned about possible insolvency in the coming months, the Ministry of Health said. On Tuesday, the government is scheduled to discuss the transfer of €41 million to the sector as a whole.
Deputy State Secretary of State Boriss Kņigins explained: “We are not talking about the support of a particular hospital at the moment, we are talking about the support of hospitals in general.”
Daugavpils municipality, the largest shareholder of Daugavpils Regional Hospital, is asking the state to join in seeking the missing €7.6 million.
