Take note – story published 1 year ago

Influenza and Covid intensity reduced in Latvia last week compared to the week before, according to information compiled by the Latvian Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on April 5.

In the previous week, from March 27 to April 2, the average intensity of influenza in Latvia decreased and was described as low – 39.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (the week before – 41.9).

In the practice of family doctors, 29 clinical cases of influenza were reported last week, most commonly in Daugavpils and Rīga. Higher influenza rates have been reported in adults over 65 years of age.

Hospitals involved in the monitoring have reported 18 patients with influenza and three hospitalized patients with influenza-induced pneumonia.

A total of 105 hospital patients with Covid-19 infection were reported from the monitoring hospitals (92 reports the week before).

Over the past week, the number of Covid-19 cases in Latvia decreased by 9.1% compared to the week before. The laboratory confirmed 199 cases of Covid-19. The proportion of positive tests increased by 0.3%.

Compared to the previous week, the number of patients in hospitals with a confirmed Covid-19 infection increased by 30.1%.

In order to minimize the risk of serious illness and death, vaccination against seasonal influenza and Covid-19 is recommended for all, but especially for those who develop severe acute upper respiratory infections and who are at high risk of complications.  Vaccination against influenza and Covid-19 may be administered at the same time, SPKC indicated.
