In the summer months, an average of 14 patients per week were treated for Covid-19 in hospitals. Perevoščikovs said that the rise of the virus is not surprising since autumn provides favorable conditions.
"People are coming back from vacations, more contact with each other. It's also September, the start of the school year. We're spending more time indoors in the autumn, it's going to be cold and we're going to be ventilating less. Each year we also have the first increase in the respiratory syncytial virus and other viruses, not just Covid-19,” Perevoščikovs said.
At the same time, he noted that the growth rates for the moment are far from those experienced previously. For example, an average of 100 patients were hospitalized per week in the spring, compared to 1,500 in the worst months of the delta-variant spread.
Perevoščikovs reiterated that people with weakened immunity - people with chronic conditions, seniors aged 65 and over, pregnant women - are at greatest risk of contracting Covid-19. Vaccination of at-risk groups against Covid-19 will protect against severe forms of the disease, reducing the risk of a fatal outcome.
