Latvia to implement EU project to combat obesity

Latvia will implement a pilot project funded by the European Union (EU), during which almost 250 people will be paid for bariatric surgery – gastric bypass or gastric sleeve, as well as further treatment for obesity, Health Center Association (VCA), which will provide the service, told LETA October 7.

The pilot project "Value-based bariatric service model", promoted by the National Health Service, will be implemented until October 2025.

A multidisciplinary team of specialists will provide the service to significantly overweight patients whose wellbeing and health are affected by obesity, which is also accompanied by a number of serious illnesses, the VCA explained.

Up to 250 patients will receive comprehensive treatment with bariatric surgery, nutrition, and lifestyle correction methods. It is planned that specialists from the VCA's AIWA Clinic will define patient selection criteria, develop a treatment roadmap, provide treatment and post-operative follow-up, as well as collect and analyze results afterward.

Obesity and overweight have a direct impact on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases and related complications, the experts stress. "Surgeon Igors Troickis, the chief physician of AIWA Clinic, says that this is a unique opportunity in Latvia, which is especially awaited by those who need bariatric surgery to lose weight but could not afford it until now.

To receive treatment in the pilot project, patients need a referral from their GP, endocrinologist, or other specialist and a contract with the VCA, committing to the conditions set by the doctors after bariatric surgery, such as following a special diet, regular face-to-face or online post-operative counseling, and so on.

It is estimated that the availability of such treatment in Latvia could lead to a sequential reduction in strokes, heart attacks and related disability and premature deaths. It is also expected to limit the financial burden on patients and the healthcare system as a whole.
