First flu cases recorded in Latvia

Latvia recorded 10 cases of influenza last week, the first this autumn. The virus has been detected in Rīga and Liepāja, Latvian Radio reported from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on Friday.

SPKC points out that only certain hospitals, general practitioners' practices and outpatient facilities participate in monitoring. This means that the true number of flu patients could be higher.

However, the overall incidence of influenza in Latvia is low, says Ilze Ūdre of the SPKC.

"The incidence is concentrated among adults aged 15-64 years. If we look together at circulating viruses, rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, parainfluenza, and adenoviruses are the most commonly detected laboratory viruses. Overall, the incidence in Latvia is lowt," explained Ūdre.

The SPKC also said that increased vaccination against influenza and Covid-19 will start next week in Latvia.
