Flu, Covid incidence declines in Latvia

The number of flu and Covid-19 patients in Latvia continues to decrease, according to information compiled by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on March 13.

The flu claimed five people's lives last week, bringing the total to 35 deaths this flu season. All the dead have also had several side-illnesses apart from the flu, and none of them have been vaccinated against the flu this season.

Last week, a total of 936 patients approached general practitioners with acute symptoms of upper respiratory infection, 238 of whom had been diagnosed with “influenza” based on a typical clinical picture (314 patients a week earlier, 337 patients two weeks earlier).

Cases were recorded in Daugavpils (654.8 cases per 100,000 population), Ventspils (521.7 per 100,000), Rīga (329.0 per 100,000), Liepāja (274.5 per 100,000), Jēkabpils (232.9 per 100,000), Rēzekne (230.5 per 100,000), Gulbene municipality (186.2 per 100,000), Jelgava (164.3 per 100,000), Jūrmala (115,9 per 100,000) and Valmiera municipality (106.5 per 100,000). per 100,000).

The highest incidence and highest incidence increase are observed in the 0-4 and 5-15 age groups.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Latvia also continues to decrease – 40 cases have been laboratory confirmed (48 a week ago), and 501 laboratory tests have been performed (644 previously) for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. 31 Covid-19 patients are in hospital (47 a week earlier, 63 two weeks earlier).

No patients have been treated in patients with severe disease in the previous week (week 1). 8 deaths of Covid-19 patients were recorded (11 a week earlier). In three deaths, Covid-19 was listed as the primary diagnosis.

The SPKC says vaccination is the most effective way to protect oneself against serious cases of influenza and Covid-19.
