Latvia short of flu vaccines

There is a significant shortage of influenza vaccines at general practitioners' offices at the moment and they are currently only available to select groups of patients, Aija Graudiņa, board member of the Association of General Practitioners, told Latvian Radio November 14.

Influenza vaccines are only available for chronic patients over 65 years of age, and intranasal flu vaccines are also available for children 2 to 7 years of age.

Recently, doctors have received a message that flu vaccines are no longer available for chronic patients under 65. Vaccines for babies are also lacking.

The doctor said there was less demand for Covid-19 vaccines this year, but more for flu vaccines. Covid-19 vaccines are currently available in a wide range, but the issue with flu vaccines needs to be addressed at the level of the Disease Prevention and Control Center and the National Health Service.

When it comes to vaccinating against Covid-19, Graudiņa said that responsiveness is very low, with seniors over 75 now vaccinating the most.

Right now, all possible upper respiratory viruses, not just Covid and flu, are circulating, Graudiņa said. At the same time, she acknowledged that Covid is gaining strength and, day by day, GPs are detecting more illness.
