Hospital takes over site from builders in dramatic standoff

Under the supervision of police, a takeover of the construction site of Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital began on Wednesday, February 21.

As reported earlier by LSM, the builder of the new Stradiņš Hospital building complex LLC "Velve" considers the hospital's decision to unilaterally terminate the contract to be illegal and wants to continue work.

Both sides – the hospital and builder Velve – had attracted lawyers and security companies, but the builder did not let hospital representatives in for almost three hours, Latvian Television reports.

The takeover began at 8:40 in the morning However, “Velve” did not allow representatives of the hospital into the construction site because it believed the builder had the right to be here and work, but lawyers of Stradiņš hospital pointed out that Velve was excluded from the construction permit, so employees of the company no longer have the right to be there.

Both sides have also attracted their own security company. Verbal clashes between lawyers on both sides occurred. Four police crews were monitoring public order.

About a hour and a half later, the lawyers went to sign the transfer act.

Taking over the building structure immediate emergency work on the site, such as the dismantling of the basement on an area of nearly 8,000 square meters, where, according to the latest BIOR analyses, seven different species of mold are now found.
