Kas notiks ar Stradiņa slimnīcas neapgūto Eiropas fondu finansējumu?

60 milion euros at stake in hospital construction project, says official

The construction of the A2 building of the Stradiņš hospital is still going slowly, and the amount of European Union (EU) funds needed has increased to 60 million euros, which there is a risk of losing in this process, Normunds Staņevičs, the chairman of the temporary board of the Stradiņš hospital, said in an interview on the LTV program "Rīta Panorāma" (Morning Panorama) October 24.

Staņevičs, who is also the head of the board of Riga East Hospital, was appointed as the chairman of the temporary board of Stradiņš Hospital in October after the previous board was dismissed by the government over concerns about administration of the costly renovation project.

Staņevičs said that within two weeks, the hospital's management met with the builders "Velve", who assured them that they are committed to "getting the A2 building under the roof and finishing the perimeter" by the end of the year. This is very important, because otherwise, interior work cannot take place during the winter.

"At the same time, what I see now, when I drive to the hospital, the work is going slowly. I hope that this commitment will really be fulfilled and no other solutions will be needed," said Stanevičs, adding that the progress of the work is being discussed with the builder on a weekly basis.

Due to the sluggishness of the work, it was previously estimated that the hospital could lose a substantial part – 46 million euros – of EU co-financing for the construction of the new building. The temporary manager of the hospital revealed that it is estimated that the risks have increased even more – now 60 million euros or even more could be at stake, describing the situatio as "very worrying."

Regarding the hospital's governance, Staņevičs pointed out that its board needs to significantly improve internal communication and work with stakeholders.

In the new part of the Stradiņš Hospital building, it is planned to place the Emergency Medical Center and reception rooms, operating rooms, surgery and neurosurgery facilities, the neurology department and stroke unit, face and jaw surgery, intensive therapy rooms, as well as a mother and child clinic.
