Overall, since the beginning of the second epidemiological wave of African swine fever in Latvia in the summer of 2021, the virus has continued to progress, and the affected area size is increasing, Seržants said.
The virus is moving slowly in Latvia. In the summer of 2021, the wave began in the eastern border area, then it passed through Latgale and part of Vidzeme.
“We can predict – where wild boars are still left and where numbers are higher, there will likely be more cases in those places this year as well,” Seržants said.
He pointed out that the process needs to be regulated by intense hunting in the long run. But domestic pigs are at risk in areas affected by the infection, so pig farmers must follow the special precautions.
