Flu epidemic continues in Latvia

While the number of Covid-19 patients dropped slightly last week, there is a rather rapid increase in flu incidence, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) reported. 

Last week, a total of 917 patients had approached general practitioners with acute symptoms of upper respiratory infection, 319 of whom were diagnosed with influenza. A week earlier, 185 patients were diagnosed the flu, and 111 two weeks previously.

Cases have been registered in Ventspils, Riga, Liepāja, Jūrmala, Jelgava, Daugavpils, Jēkabpils, Rēzekne, and Valmiera.

Influenza cases have been recorded in all age groups, however, the highest influenza intensity has been recorded in the age group 0-4.

Last week, 48 cases of influenza were laboratory confirmed (29 a week earlier), with 46 samples having type A flu and 2 having type B flu.

Meanwhile, the number of Covid-19 cases in Latvia has not changed during the week - 96 cases have been laboratory confirmed (also 96 a week earlier), a total of 1,039 (previously 727) laboratory tests have been performed on the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The number of inpatient Covid-19 patients rose slightly to 97 (a week earlier 84, two weeks earlier 118).
