The autumn seasonal increase in the incidence of Covid-19 is starting again in Latvia, and appears to be especially pronounced among children. At the same time, it is predicted that the stable situation in hospitals will remain so for the next month at least, Director of the Infectious Disease Risk Analysis and Prevention Department of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) Jurijs Perevoščikovs said in an interview on the LTV program "Rīta Panorāma" September 14.

In the past seven days, the number of registered cases of Covid-19 in Latvia increased by 20%. In recent weeks, the trend of increasing morbidity has been observed in children under the age of 19, making this currently the most affected population group.

Overall, an increasing number of tests are positive – around one in four.

Regarding the number of patients with Covid-19 in hospital, Perevoščikovs stated that "Currently, this indicator is within acceptable limits".

He pointed to the forecasts of groups of scientists in the European Union that the situation in hospitals will not significantly deteriorate in at least the next four weeks. "Most likely, the overall morbidity will continue to increase, but the situation in hospitals will remain stable," said Perevoščikovs.

The epidemiologist emphasized that vaccination remains the best form of protection: "Vaccination would be recommended for everyone who does not want to get sick."
