Cat tested Covid-19 positive in Latvia

In Latvia, for the first time, Covid-19 has been detected in a cat, infectologist Uga Dumpis said at the Saeima Social and Labor Affairs Committee meeting February 2.

He noted that Latvia is the only country in the vicinity that has detected infection with Covid-19 in a cat. Coronavirus antibodies have been found in several cats, Dumpis said.

Dumpis said that the particular cat has now travelled to Estonia, adding that all this had happened recently: samples collected from cats had been tested on 31 January. In total, samples were collected from 240 cats, some of which were pets of Covid-19 positive humans.

Cats were tested as part of a study within the framework a national research program on Covid-19 mitigation.
