As several medics, including neurologists have contracted COVID-19, the neurology department and stroke unit at Vidzeme hospital in Valmiera has been closed for a period of about two weeks, the hospital's spokeswoman Benita Brila told the LETA newswire December 18.

During this time, acute patients with suspected strokes will be taken to stroke clinics in Rīga or Rēzekne.

Patients with other neurological problems will be taken to Alūksne hospital and other nearest hospitals where services of neurological specialists are available.

Medics provided a reminder that every second is of importance in the treatment of stroke. The sooner the Emergency Medical Service is called, the sooner the necessary assistance can be provided.

On Thursday, four COVID-19 patients were admitted to Vidzeme hospital, and one was discharged. The hospital currently is treating 34 COVID patients, three of whom are in a serious condition.
