Few people got the jab over holidays in Latvia

Few people took the opportunity to get vaccinated over Christmas holidays, Latvian Television reported December 27.

In preparation for the rapid spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus, doctors encourage people not to postpone vaccination – neither the booster nor first-time vaccines. However, demand was very low over the three-day Christmas holiday.

All data may not yet have been entered in the system, but the information currently available shows that a total of fewer than 1,000 people were vaccinated during the three-day period. In most cases, a booster vaccine was received.

There was also no significant increase in interest in the coming days as regards the possibility of vaccination. There are many free time slots on holidays when some vaccination points will also be open. Major vaccination centres will be opened again in Riga this week: the Ķīpsala center will start work on Tuesday and the ATTA center on Thursday.

Vaccination of children aged 5-11 is also proceeding slowly. Data from NVD show that by Sunday, December 26, 1,223 children, or less than one percent of children in this age group, received their first shot. Vaccination of children started on December 16 in Latvia. Doctors specifically call for children with chronic diseases to be vaccinated.
