Flu has claimed 52 lives this season

The flu has claimed 52 lives this season, according to Latvia's Center for Disease Control and Prevention data for last week.

The number of influenza patients decreased 19.3% over the week before, but some cities such as Ventspils, Liepāja and Daugavpils recorded more cases.

The highest flu intensity was registered in Gulbene, Rēzekne and Liepāja. 

The average age of the people who died was 65. 

During the previous epidemic, flu killed 91 people, and a year before 75 people succumbed to the seasonal infection.

A flu epidemic in Latvia was declared on January 15.
