Health insurance system change postponed again in Latvia

On December 9 the Saeima supported the amendments to the Health Care Finance Law in the final reading, which provide that health care services will be available to the public until 2023 in the same way as now.

The previously planned introduction of the two-tier system provided for a different approach to health insurance for mandatory state social insurance contributors. In the past, such a division was deemed to be biased and disproportionate, and it was postponed until 2021. A year later, it was postponed again, and the Saeima has now agreed to delay it for another year until 2023.

The draft law provides for Cabinet to draw up and submit to the Saeima a draft law regarding the introduction of a single state-paid healthcare service and a comprehensive mandatory state health insurance by October 1, 2022. In the past, such a task had been assigned to the government by 31 March 2020 and then by 30 April 2021.

The amendments were unanimously supported by 72 MPs.
