Next week, mandatory use of face masks in public transportation should be resumed, Minister of Health Ilze Viņķele told Latvian Radio October 2.

Viņķele called on the public to be cautious at individual level and carefully evaluate participation in events and travel, as well as work remotely as far as possible.

"In assessing this situation, experts agree – it should be mandatory to use masks on public transport in Latvia starting next week. This proposal will be directed to government viewing and would be the first step in reviewing the restrictive conditions," Viņķele said.

The Minister also said: “We have also learned from the summer that the closure measures should not be introduced again, as their impact on the society and economic activity is very serious. What we will continue to do: implement, under expert leadership, the restrictive rules which, in the opinion of experts, are needed right now without exaggerating them.

The most important task is to keep the educational opportunities open to children as long as possible, and from there will also be a downward revision of the restrictions if needed in addition to these mouth-and-nose covers."
