Latvia's Health Minister Ilze Viņķele (Development/For!) has replaced five chief specialists in the country's healthcare system, including Dace Baltiņa, the ministry's oncology specialist who was, for a time, a high-ranking employee at a company promoting the highly controversial Rigvir anti-cancer medicine.

Baltiņa was routinely criticized in the media for her simultaneous work at a private medical company while concurrently playing a role at the Health Ministry.

Baltiņa's post will be taken by oncologist Jānis Eglītis.

The office is not remunerated and chief specialists are routinely asked for their opinion in a number of situations pertaining to their area of expertise; they can be though of as policy shapers in their areas.

The Health Ministry told Delfi this is a routine renewal of personnel and indeed new chief specialists have been assigned in trauma treatment, orthopedics, neurology and rehabilitation.
